President's Message | December 2019

November was another busy month for the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce. We kicked off the month with our General Membership Meeting on November 1. Chancellor Bonnie Irwin, University of Hawaii at Hilo, was our guest speaker.

On November 5 Mahealani Richardson, Hawaii News Now, interviewed me on the economic impact of the ongoing protest and delay in building TMT. A portion of that interview was aired on Hawaii News Now on November 7.

The Cost of Living Task Force, led by HICC member Glen Kagamida, met with several Hawaii Island Legislators and County Council representatives on November 8. This meeting was the culmination of over six months of work by the task force to develop viable solutions to reduce the cost of living in Hawaii.

On November 9 a small contingent of HICC volunteers participated in the Hilo Veterans Day Parade, honoring all veterans. Our parade entry was a very patriotically decorated F-150 and a few walkers. Mahalo to Al Inoue and Sharon Sheele for the use of their truck and to all those who either participated in the parade or cheered us on from the audience.

This month’s Business After Hours event was held on November 19 at Ben Franklin Store in Hilo. I learned that I am a crafter klutz but that didn’t stop me from having fun. Mahalo to Ben Franklin and their talented employees for hosting this event!

Our Young Professionals group packed 50 shoe boxes, full of toys, school supplies, and toiletries, for Operation Christmas Child on November 21. Mahalo to all HICC members for their donations. Children opening these boxes this holiday season will be so happy!

HICC held its quarterly New Member Orientation on November 22. The event was appropriately themed for Thanksgiving and even included a local style cornucopia, compliments of host W.H. Shipman!

Small Business Saturday (November 30, #ShopSmall) was a great opportunity to shop for unique gifts while supporting our local small businesses. A team of HICC members canvassed small businesses in downtown Hilo on November 25 to provide information and swag to businesses and encourage their participation in this national event.

For many the start of December means holiday preparations, gift buying and wrapping, parties and celebrations, time for reflection, spending time with family and friends, baking and cooking and eating, and a whole lot of fun. As you prepare your list of things to do and places to shop, don’t forget to check out the HICC Business-2-Business list of member discounts. You will find some great specials like 10% off wine and spirits (375ml or larger) at Kadota Liquor!

On a very sad note, HICC lost two members recently. I know you join me in heartfelt condolences to the families of the late Mealoha Kraus and Brian Kitagawa.

Wishing all of you a very joyful and blessed holiday season, filled with the love and warmth of family and friends. Thank you for your support and friendship!

Happy holidays,
Rhea
