President's Message | November 2019

Recently I returned from a two-week trip to the mainland. While I had a lot of fun on my trip, nothing beats being back home among family and friends. Coming home reminds me how very lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place. As I write this article, I hear birds chirping outside my window. The gentle and cool breeze of the morning, and the sun just rising over the horizon refreshes me. How fitting it is that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I have much to be thankful for.

Another thing I am very thankful for are our Veterans, who have served our country selflessly to protect us from harm and keep us safe. Many of us celebrate Veteran’s Day, a national holiday, by taking the day off work and spending time with loved ones. One of our members, Deb Lewis, who is a retired Army Colonel and President of Mentally Tough Women, has been working very hard to recognize veterans in the annual Hilo Veterans Day Parade. The Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce will be participating in this event on Saturday, November 9 with a truck for member veterans, and an accompaniment of walkers. I hope you will be there as well. Click on this link for more information on how you can participate. http://www.hivetparade.org/

November also signifies the start of holiday shopping. First, I need to get all my grocery supplies for Thanksgiving dinner. And then it’s off to our fine local stores in the hunt for the perfect gifts for Christmas. As you put your gift list together, please consider HICC member businesses for your go-to shopping. Don’t forget to take a look at the Business 2 Business page in this newsletter for special HICC member discounts or view them on our website here!

Saturday, November 30 is Small Business Saturday. The HICC has supported this movement for several years and again will be making its rounds to small businesses in Hilo to distribute swag, literature, and ideas to help small businesses prosper. Small Business Saturday was launched 10 years ago by American Express, in an effort to help small brick and mortar and online businesses survive. We all spend money around this time. Please know that where you spend your money makes a difference. Thank you for supporting small businesses!

Finally, looping back to Thanksgiving, I want to thank all of you for your membership and participation in HICC events. I want to thank the executive committee and the Board of Directors for their commitment and hard work. I want to thank our Committee chairs and members for planning and implementing great Chamber events. And I want to thank our excellent Chamber staff, Miles and Taylor, for their amazing work.

Hope you all have a very wonderful November!
Rhea
