President's Message | August 2019

Aloha!

As you read this message, July is but a memory and we’ve already welcomed August. Headlines and live tv coverage of the protests, against, and in support for, building the Thirty Meter Telescope dominated all Hawaii media sources during the second half of July.

As I write this article, Mayor Kim is working on bringing the parties together to reach agreement that honors the interests of all. I am hopeful that Mayor Kim is successful, and TMT starts construction soon.

This issue has spurred emotions on all fronts, and I admit that I have succumbed to emotion myself. At times I found myself thinking about my future here and wondering if I should consider a move to the mainland. But then sanity set in and I thought about all the good things our island offers to its residents and visitors. I am fortunate to be living on the most beautiful Hawaiian island. I am fortunate to live among neighbors and friends who bring diversity to life. This is my home; and I love the people, the colorful cultures, and life here, even if it is sometimes turbulent.

Whichever side you are on about the construction of TMT, know that if history plays out, there will be resolution. Then comes the healing of our community and relationships. In the meantime, I encourage you to let our Governor know how you feel about Maunakea by submitting your comments here.

On another subject, July was a busy month! The Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce welcomed twelve new members:

And finally, if you’ve been contemplating getting more involved in your chamber, now is a great time to volunteer for one of our standing committees. Contact Miles Yoshioka and let him know you want to serve!

Have a great August!
Rhea
