President's Message | June 2019

I recently attended the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo commencement and though I’ve attended many commencements over the years, I continue to get choked up when I hear Pomp and Circumstance welcoming the graduates. This is such a proud moment for parents and family as their child walks down the aisle to receive their diploma. Many will be leaving home soon to pursue advance degrees or join the workforce. This, however, is not the end of their journey, but the beginning of a wonderful life. Continuing her journey is Hawai‘i Island Chamber of Commerce’s Administrative Assistant, Kristen Yagi who was one of the UHH graduates. Congratulations Kristen!

In June, the Chamber will hold its Installation celebrating a successful 2018-19 year and welcoming Rhea Lee-Moku and her Team. Similar to the UHH graduation, the Installation is not the end of one year and the beginning of another, but a continuation of a journey which was started in 1898 with the formation of the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce.

As with all journeys, many contributed and played an instrumental role in our success. Thank you to Executive Director Miles Yoshioka for successfully managing our new office and numerous events. President-Elect Rhea Lee-Moku, Vice-President Toby Taniguchi, Treasurer Haidee Abe and Membership Chair Kimberly Pua help lead our chamber serving on the Executive Committee. Our strong Board of Directors is second to none. Thank you everyone.

2018-19 was a great year. The Kilauea Eruption shows everyone how resilient our Hawaii island community is and how everyone pulled together. We had a very busy year with the Governor’s forum and our challenge to the Constitutional Amendment. We continued to support the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Community College while having “Coffee with the Chancellors” every quarter. We continued to support the Pohakuloa Training Area and the Thirty Meter Telescope. Once again we held a successful Employment Law Seminar and the President’s Cup Golf Tournament. In April we held our Medical Cannabis Forum and in May a successful Administrative Professional Day. One ongoing project we like to have everyone’s participate in is the Cost of Living Forum spearheaded by Glen Kagamida. There’ve been so many other projects and events, including several “Lunch and Learn” sessions. We continued to work with the Hawaii State Legislature on numerous legislative bills and similarly with the Hawaii County Administration and Council. We must not forget the many successful Business After Hours coordinated by the Social Committee.

Yes, this has been a wonderful and successful journey, one which we could not have achieved without everyone’s coordinated support. To everyone, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! To Rhea Lee-Moku and her incoming team good luck and best wishes for a continued successful journey.

Mahalo and Aloha,
Gordon Takaki
