President's Message | April 2019

I’ve been watching the NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament and once again, my favorite team will not be in the Final 4, not even in the final 32. Oh well, wait ‘til next year.

Though I’ve never played competitive basketball, I did play intramural at the UH Manoa Klum Gym (yeah I’m dating myself.) It’s an exciting sport and one requiring team coordination with everyone needing to be in position, knowing who should be the shooter. Although basketball is a sport, its discipline is relevant to every walk of life. I’ve tried to keep that thought in mind.

I can’t believe there are only three months left in this administrative year. The saying “time flies when you’re having fun” runs true here. Through the hard work and dedication of vice-presidents, committee chairs, board members and our membership, your Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce is experiencing a great year with numerous events and activities. We will soon hold our installation dinner where we will welcome our 2019-20 president Rhea Lee-Moku and her team.

An important undertaking we recently started is our Cost of Living Task Force under the leadership of Glen Kagamida. This is a result of a meeting we had at the State Capitol with our Hawaii Island Legislators where our discussion on the minimum wage increase transitioned to the cost of living. And the response from the legislators was “well, what are your ideas?”

Thus the Cost of Living Task Force was formed with the intent of developing ideas to present to Legislators before the 2020 Legislative Session. There will be numerous meetings in several broad categories involving many members representing various segments of our economy and community. If you are interested in participating, please contact Glen Kagamida.

The Legislature is starting to wind down and moving into conference committee meetings. There are bills we support and others we oppose. For those who are interested in specific measures and inclined to submit written testimony we appreciate your involvement. Please let us know if you aren’t sure of the process of submitting testimony via the Hawaii State Legislature website.

Lastly, if you are reading this newsletter and are not a member, we welcome you to join the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce and participate in many of our interesting and informative programs. Our chamber has been the “voice of business” and an important part of our community for 120 years while advancing the economic well-being of our island.

To our membership and community thank you very much for your continued support.

Mahalo,
Gordon Takaki
