President's Message | January 2019

A very Happy New Years to all of you, your families and to those you continue to touch. I hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season and are looking forward to a successful 2019. 2018 was a challenging year with the Kilauea Eruption, Hurricane Olivia and tropical storms and floods. But Hawai‘i Island continues to be a resilient community.

I cannot believe that 6 months have gone by in my term as President of the Hawai‘i Island Chamber of Commerce. It is certainly an important task with many responsibilities. However, the success of our Chamber is a direct result of the Officers, Committee Chairs and Members working together to provide the many events and activities we can all be proud of.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a special event of the Urasenke Hilo Association, a Tea Ceremony and presentation of the “Message in a Bottle Project” at the Urasenke Tea House in the Liliuokalani Garden. Kentaro Motohara provided a presentation explaining the project.

Astronauts on board the International Space Station in orbit around the Earth performed a special extravehicular activity to capture a sample of space and returned it to earth in a small glass bottle to make this experience possible. Astronauts performed two separate missions in order to successfully capture space and safely bring it back home.

Once brought to earth, Message in a Bottle becomes a conduit between humans and space, between our world and the one beyond us. The hope is to inspire wonder about our extra-terrestrial activities in this new Age of Exploration and to make us realize that earth itself is merely one small part of the entire universe.

Message in a Bottle is a project which now travels the globe, giving visitors the chance to hold in their hands the delicate glass bottle containing the powerful vacuum of space that surrounds our fragile planet. After the experience, visitors express their thoughts and feelings. As with others who attended I wrote mine out and they became part of a growing archive.

I look at this this project as I look at our Hawai‘i Island Community and see the similarity of holding the powerful vacuum of space that surrounds our fragile Earth. As we go about our daily lives and business we must envision our business community and fragile environment we affect. We must always be in tune with those around us and aware of the effect we have on the future. We hold in our hands the future of Hawai‘i Island.

Happy 2019,

Gordon Takaki
