President's Message | November 2018

Can you believe that the holidays are looming on the horizon? This month we’ll be giving thanks with the ones we hold dear, and then we’ll be looking forward to the arrival of jolly old St. Nick. I’m rushing the season a little by starting to open the many boxes of decorations for our home and yard. And as busy as our home lives are, most of us continue to be active with the Chamber and be involved in its many programs and events.

As many of you know, my wife, Gail, and I are host parents to international students, primarily from Japan. One of the common practices we see is when the students, prior to eating a meal, will put their hands together and say “Itadakimasu”. When we asked why they did this, they said it is to provide thanks and gratitude for the food. It is not only for the preparation of the meal, but also for planting, growing and harvesting of the food that goes into the making of the meal.

They also give thanks to the farmers who raise the livestock and the fishermen who catch the seafood. This is also done when receiving something or when someone does something for them. Growing up I recall this was said at family events, but I never knew what it meant. The more I think about it, the more I realize how important I need to practice this and acknowledge those who do things for us in our everyday life. Instead of saying “itadakimasu” we can simply provide a “Thank You” to those who have completed a task or worked together to achieve a goal.

It has been a very busy year with many activities since the Installation Dinner. We recently held our first Membership Meeting in conjunction with the Energy Forum featuring Honua Ola Bioenergy, Hawaii Electric Light Company and Puna Geothermal Ventures at a sold out event. We’ve had a Gov-ernor’s Forum, Lunch and Learn programs, several Business After Hours and all while there was an ac-tive Kilauea eruption. Then we were involved with the Constitutional Amendment issue. Congratula-tions and A Job Well Done to all those who were involved. The next quarter will be just as busy and active. Stay tuned.

To every Chamber member and those involved in our activities “Itadakimasu” and Mahalo,

Gordon

“I’ve been so lucky to work with such great people – people that are such hard workers and have such a respect and appreciation for one another.”
