President's Message | July 2018

This is certainly a challenging time for Hawaii Island and especially the people of Puna with the Kilauea eruption. As with many community organizations, the Chamber will work with government agencies and others to assist eruption evacuees and those who have been displaced.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Chamber President. It is an honor to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before me. A special congratulation and mahalo to outgoing President Bill Walter for a successful and outstanding year. Best wishes to Bill in his endeavors.

Thanks to all who have helped me on my journey to this point in my life. I’m originally from Honolulu and joined the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce in the early 90’s. Shortly thereafter I moved back to Honolulu and upon my return to Hilo 10 years later I rejoined, and have continued participating with the Chamber. I’m looking forward to working with our knowledgeable and talented Board of Directors.

With the Board of Directors we will continue our support of the University of Hawaii-Hilo, including Hawaii Community College and the College of Pharmacy. We will also continue our support of astronomy, Office of Maunakea Management and the Thirty Meter Telescope. Through our Military Affairs Committee we will continue to support Pohakuloa Training Area headed by their new Commander, Lt. Col. Loreto V. Borce Jr. Through our various chamber committees there will be many workshops and events supporting our business members and community. Please watch for our popular Business After Hours coordinated by our Social Committee.

Another of our goals is to increase membership to expand our support for the East Hawaii Community. Our Membership Committee develops marketing strategies to increase our membership and work with existing members to ensure that they are getting the best value from their membership.

Our committees are the backbone of the Chamber. Many of the decisions made by our Board of Directors are initially recommended by the various committees. We invite you to join one or more of our committees and have an impact.

I look forward to seeing you at future programs and events.

Aloha and Mahalo,

Gordon
