President's Message | January 2017
Aloha mai kakou,
With the cool winter weather and snow atop Mauna Kea, where else in the world would you rather be, than here on Hawai‘i Island for this most festive time of the year? OK, so there’s been a bit of precipitation and yes, we have to deal with much more of our fellow islanders at the malls and stores, but to me, that’s what makes the holiday season so special.
Representatives from our Chamber teamed up with representatives from the Hawai’i Island Realtors, Hawai’i Island Contractors Association, and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawai‘i, to meet with State Representatives Onishi, Creagan, Nakashima and Evans. The purpose of the meeting, which was initiated by Representative Nakashima, was to provide our business community the opportunity to share our concerns and share any suggested solutions with our Representatives.
Overall, our discussion touched on Land Use (affordable housing, homelessness, State leases), Health Care and ultimately focusing on building a stronger economy. The 2017 Legislative session opens on January 18. Representatives from our various business organizations plan to participate in a “walk around” with other State business organizations to say hello to all of our legislators. Our Chamber will be working closely with the Chamber of Commerce of HAWAII throughout the legislative session.
Also, congratulations to Hawaiian Airlines for now having direct flights between Haneda, Japan and the Kona Airport. The inaugural flight was on December 21, 2016.
To conclude, here’s hoping that 2016 was a good year for as many of us as possible. Let’s all work towards having a safe, healthy and prosperous 2017!
‘A hui hou, Mike.
