Great way to show your support for the future of astronomy here on our island. Of course we all want to go forward with the utmost respect for the cultural and spiritual importance of Maunakea to all our people. This is your opportunity to make certain that the business community is part of TMT’s decision to come here!

What a week! Three community meetings in three nights for me. The tone of each meeting was very different, with the first one in Waimea being very positive and supportive of TMT. All three nights had lots of support, but the Hilo and Pahoa meetings had a few more people who were hung up on old problems. I think that everyone, even the critics, recognize how important the TMT is to us for moving forward into the future. I even think that a few of them see that the people from TMT want to do it the right way and are willing to work with the community to ensure that they proceed in a respectful way to everyone who loves the Mauna. Billy Kenoi, Clift Tsuji, Jerry Chang and Governor Lingle all have indicated their support for this amazing project. I hope that we can continue to have meaningful conversations about what really matters to all of us.

The first TMT hearing was tonight. It was well attended and the community participants were mostly friendly and enthusiastic about the TMT EIS. A couple of people claimed that it is wrong for the TMT to be built on Maunakea, but everyone was very respectful regardless of their opinion. I commented that the EIS really needs more cultural data collected before conclusions can be drawn. The architect who designed the TMT was there to answer questions, as were many other interested parties. I hope you’ll attend one of the other meetings this week and next. Let’s work together to be part of the solution.

President McClain issued a statement about benefits to come to the Big Island should the TMT come here.
Half of the value of the deal to come to the Big Island. And, a part of this is a $1 million dollar annual contribution to an education fund adminitered by the community for the community.
One can still do business on a handshake with Henry Yang the president of the TMT corporation.

TMT would fund Island education
In case you didn’t see Richard Ha’s blog last week, here’s some good news for Hawai‘i Island education from David McClain, UH System president:
“After discussions with academic and community leaders on the Big Island, and review with the Board of Regents, I can say that should TMT come to Mauna Kea, the Hawaiian community and community-at-large will benefit through an annual $1 million community benefit package, which will provide funding for locally chosen and managed educational programs on Hawai‘i Island. This will begin once all permits for the project have been received.
The compensation to the University of Hawai‘i, which is expected to begin at “first light,” will be split equitably between a higher education package to be used for selected initiatives of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College on Hawai‘i Island, and observing time for University of Hawai‘i scientists.
David McClain
President
University of Hawai‘i”

East Hawai`i Coalition Meets on TMT
Representatives from Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce (HICC), Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii (JCCIH), Kanoelehua Industrial Area Association (KIAA) and Hawaii Island Economic Development Board (HIEDB), met Monday 6/1 to discuss joint efforts on the Thirty Meter Telescope project.
We’re pleased and impressed with the depth and extent of leadership that HIEDB exhibits on this project and are happy to partner with them and the other groups to advance this most important project for our island—well, for our state and nation, too!
We understand that Chile is also working hard to get the nod for the TMT. For Hawaii’s upcoming generations and for our very immediate economic needs, we need to do all in our power to see the TMT come to Hawaii, but in what Richard Ha so appropriately says, ‘in a pono manner.’
There will be a sign waving June 12 that we hope you’ll come out for, and then we’ll need to get business people to come to public hearings. Please, read the sections of the DRAFT Environmental Impact Statement that are in your kuleana. We need to support TMT coming to Hawaii, but we want the final EIS to be well done, with your input.
If you are knowledgeable in wastewater, solid and/or haz waste management, biological resources, power and communications or archeology, review those sections, let us (Judi Steinman at exec.hicc.biz) know your comments/concerns. We need to get positive comments, but also constructive suggestions, into the EIS process.
Cheers.
