Businesspeople: to blog or not to blog?

posted 05/25/09 by Barbara Hastings

Welcome to the HICC blog. We hope to get a dialogue going with East Hawaii business.

There’s a story about the Thirty Meter Telescope and its environmental impact statement in Friday’s (5/22) Hawaii Tribune Herald. If you’re not up on the latest, it’s an important read for business.
The EIS says the overall community benefits of the TMT outweigh adverse impacts.

An important point that Reporter Peter Sur presents is the Workforce Pipeline Program that would train a local workforce for high quality jobs.

Read the comments that have started coming in to the Trib’s online site. Make sure the voice of business is included in this commentary.
While you’re one the web, also spend some time checking Tiffany Edwards’ Big Island Chronicle and Damon Tucker’s Blog. Whether you agree or not with the posts, it will keep you looped into the information cycle.

Edwards’ commentary on the County Council’s first reading of the budget is revealing.

Cheers,
Hastings

Check out Richard Ha’s blog today.

    Money For Education

    Richard Ha writes:

This afternoon, University of Hawai‘i President David McClain issued this statement:

After discussions with academic and community leaders on the Big Island, and review with the Board of Regents, I can say that should TMT come to Mauna Kea, the Hawaiian community and community-at-large will benefit through an annual $1 million community benefit package, which will provide funding for locally chosen and managed educational programs on Hawai‘i Island. This will begin once all permits for the project have been received.

The compensation to the University of Hawai‘i, which is expected to begin at “first light,” will be split equitably between a higher education package to be used for selected initiatives of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College on Hawai‘i Island, and observing time for University of Hawai‘i scientists.

it wasn’t so long ago that Richard Ha started a new conversation within the community with his “What If” letter to the editor.

What if culture and science could co-exist on the mountain?

What if there were community benefits focusing on education so the entire island could benefit?

What if we coud mitigate the environmental issues?

What if we started a new paradigm and did things the right way?

What if business and labor and community could work together for the betterment of all to make TMT a reality?

I am grateful that Richard Ha started this conversation and got us actively involved!!

I am curious as to how the Thirty Meter Telescope will improve your own business’ opportunities. Think about it – the construction industry, the electrical contractors, the new education opportunities – everyone will be affected. what“s your view on this?
