2016 Mayoral Candidate Forum

posted 06/28/16 by HICC

Hawai‘i Island residents will get an opportunity to learn more about the candidates running for Hawaii County’s top job at a free mayoral forum from 6-8 p.m. July 14 at Sangha Hall in Hilo.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Parking is free. Sangha Hall is located at 424 Kilauea Ave.

Journalist Sherry Bracken of Mahalo Broadcasting will moderate the event featuring four of the 13 candidates running for office, including Harry Kim, Pete Hoffmann, Wally Lau and Marlene Hapai. The remaining nine candidates were offered tables at the event on which to display their campaign literature.

There is no sign-waving on the facility property or inside the hall.

Forum sponsors include the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, Big Island Press Club, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hawaii Island Realtors, Hawaii Island Contractors Association, Kanoelehua Industrial Area Association and the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce.

Each of the four candidates will be given an equal amount of time to respond to the same questions, a combination of those developed by the sponsoring organizations and those submitted in advance by the public to admin@hicc.biz.

Those unable to attend the event in person can watch a livestream at Hawaii247.com.

July 14 also is the last day to register to vote online at elections.hawaii.gov. The primary election is August 13.
