President's Message | July 2020

Happy July everyone!

Years ago I took a multi-week course on management from Glenn Furuya. While some of what I learned faded over the years, one of the key concepts I remember was about the life of a business. He emphasized that when a business reaches the mature stage it needs to bifurcate its business model or else the business will start a downward death spiral. Over the last few months I was reminded of this as I saw businesses implement innovative changes to their business, such as:

• Contactless delivery of food and merchandise;
• Virtual home buying;
• Online selection and purchase with curbside pick up;
• New products and services;
• Drive-through and drive-in celebrations for weddings, birthdays, and graduations;
• Creating a safer shopping experience by installing barriers between staff and customers, and offering customers protective masks, hand sanitizer, or gloves;
• Implementing special shopping hours for those who have the greatest risk;
• Waiving or delaying collection and similar actions for customers who are struggling to pay for rent, utilities, and other bills; and
• Allowing employees to work from home and moving meetings and events to online platforms.
